Halloween - an interesting concept!

i being an Indian, who has never stepped outside India, was never aware of halloween until recently. and this year, for whatever reason, i am repeatedly hearing a lot of talk about halloween. so i went about googling & this is what i got out of it. thought would post therm out here....

Halloween
Halloween is a tradition celebrated on the night of October 31, most notably by children dressing in costumes and going door-to-door collecting sweets. Halloween originated as a Pagan festival. The term Halloween, and its older spelling Hallowe'en, is shortened from All-hallow-even, as it is the evening before "All Hallows' Day" (also known as "All Saints' Day"). In Ireland, the name was All Hallows' Eve (often shortened to Hallow Eve), and though seldom used today, it is still a well-accepted label. Halloween is often associated with the occult. Many European cultural traditions hold that Halloween is one of the those times of the year when the spiritual world can make contact with the physical world and when magic is most potent!!! :-)

Trick or Treat
The main event of modern US-style Halloween is trick-or-treating, in which children dress up in costume disguises and go door-to-door in their neighborhood, ringing each doorbell and yelling "trick or treat!" Though, Trick-or-treating resembles the late medieval practice of "souling," when poor folk would go door to door, receiving food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day.

Symbols
The imagery surrounding Hallowe'en is largely an amalgamation of the Halloween season itself, nearly a century of work from American filmmakers and graphic artists, and a rather commercialized take on the dark, diaria and mysterious. Black and orange are the traditional colors of Hallowe'en. In modern Hallowe'en images and products, purple, green, and red are also prominent.

Food **aah, my best part! :-)**
Because the holiday comes in the wake of the annual apple harvest, Candy Apples (also known as toffee, taffy or caramel apples) are a common treat at Halloween. They are made by rolling whole apples in a sticky sugar syrup, and sometimes then rolling them in nuts. **oh, boy, can somebody sponsor me a two-way trip only 4 1 day every year??** A Halloween custom which has survived unchanged to this day in Ireland is the baking (or more often nowadays the purchase) of a barmbrack (Irish "báirín breac"). This is a light fruit cake into which a plain ring is placed before baking. It is said that whoever finds this ring will find his or her true love during the following year. **wow! i love the ring concept**

Interesting facts
1. Halloween is most popular in Ireland, where it is said to have originated, is celebrated Halloween as Samhain, "End of Summer", a pastoral and agricultural fire festival or feast, when the dead revisited the mortal world, and large communal bonfires would be lit to ward off evil spirits.
2. Today in England, unlike other parts of the world, adults often dress up and go to fancy dress parties or pubs and clubs on Hallowe'en night. **and, what do the kids do?? :-)**
3. In the United States, Halloween has become the sixth most profitable holiday (after Christmas, Mother's Day, Valentines Day, Easter, and Father's Day) for retailers **boy, opportunists, yeah?!!**
4. The National Confectioners Association reported, in 2005, that 80 percent of adults planned to give out candy to trick-or-treaters, and that 93 percent of children planned to go trick-or-treating. **well, who funds them??**

Now after reading about Halloween I wonder what it would have been called if this was in celebrated in India???

Rains. What a terror.

i hear the Chennai is submerged in rains! poor Chennai! it has been raining continuously for over few days; literally non-stop. 24/7!! yet it seem to have the same energy & zeal to pelt down more. phew! its tough to live under such conditions of extreme rainfall. imagine a never ending rain-fall that does not allow you to move out of house. you are under house-arrest. :-(

i have read some time ago that "when it rains, it pours." and this time around the rains in chennai has been a classical example to prove this statement. and this has become a norm oflate. no rains for a real long time and suddenly all of the rain at the same time. its like retaining the water for over 2-3 months & pouring it all-at-once in a single week. now, how in heavens any city can handle this? now no blames on the city-architect for not having planned for heavy rains please! how in jupiter can he/she/they even work out a plan for such a unpredictable event?? whats happening now is more like suddenly THE Rain God woke up from a deep slumber & tipped the bucket & promplty went back to sleep!!! what the heck, I say.

But check the impossible determination of chennaites. check these snaps to know it. and, i am sure this was the case out there in mumbai too. or may be more. hats off to their commitment to attend offices, be present in colleges/schools & meet their lovers. :-)

Lemme quote the yahoo news! "The Met department Sunday said that since last night (oct 28, 2006) Chennai had received 188.8 mm of rain and its outskirts 94.5 mm." phew! thats way too much buddy. way too much for a 1 night. am sure even james-bond would not be belting out this much for an 1-night affair. ;-) **censoring other irrelevant nasty thoughts** ;-D

After seeing about rains i went about tryin to understand why rains & why only chennai, ap (esp vizak, vijayawada) & orissa. Because of my ability to fall asleep everytime my geo lecturer walked in, i did not, to say the least, understand the scientific reason behind rains, low-pressure & stuffs. all i was able to gather was there is low-pressure (tending towards serious depression) in bay-of-bengal, which is the main cause for this incessant rains. Also, i hear that this depression is moving towards AP! **gulp** Hope it does not affect hyd much.

Having said all these I would like to say that Rain introduces a tinge of romantism in air. Rainy season is the best time to catch up with things. Be it sleep. Be it GF (or BFs). Be it with a nice novel. Be it a nice hot spicy mirchi-bajji. :-)

But the best use of rain till date is when you get wet with it. Its really really fun 2 get wet in rain. and its more fun if you get to play a game of soccer. And it is ultimate if your mom back home goes red seeing your wet & dirty!!! Man its fun, unlimited. Mom, I wish I was home.

Phew! At last...

...a post after months. I was busy. Busy in very many things and a lot of restrictions that held me from doing what i enjoyed - blogging. I could reel out what had taken so much of my valuable time that I was not even able to update my blog or even read others blogs.

To start with...
...they had blocked blogspot in my ofc. :-(
...my manager suddenly fell in love with me & never wanted me to even have a minute of free-time.
...a few minutes of spare time i got i tried my best to catch up with my friends. i did but did not do it well enuf.
...weddings, marriages, nuptials & what not. I was constantly out of town attending my friends' most important events
...and, to top it all, i was on a look out for a change of job!!! And, I successful did. :-)

Currently, i am no more associated with my previous company & moved to a smaller firm with, obviously, better pay. The overall experience of change of job was a little rigorous but a learning one. The only hitch was that I had to re-locate my base from the world-known Bangalore to a lesser-yet-known Hyderabad. The thought of moving out of a well-established surroundings to a unknown place was a bit unnerving. In fact, though it is the 4th day in my office, i am still uncomfy & nervous. :-(

Regardin my ofc, here is the mail i had sent 2 my frnds that kinda briefs about my experience in my new place. I shall past it here 4 my e-friends :-) -

Here i am @ Hyd happily yet-to-be settled. The office looks kewl. Crowded with 30 ppl!! Got introduced to the entire office in 5minutes (+/- few seconds). Has got a small cafe which can accomodate one team @ a time, provided team size is two. But, yeah, i am assigned a comp the very minute i walked in. :-) though i was seated @ a place where even a blind man "walking on the road" can see what I am up to; ofcourse, now i am in a bit more secure place (meaning, can do whatever i want) ;-) nd, i am yet to be assigned a email id, work, a buddy or responsibility. fun unlimited! :-D

i think i am wrongly-oriented. this place is not 4 me :-( this place has only 2 females & none in the flirt-category (1 awesomely sexy aunt who does'nt know to smile & another "no comments plz"). also, if nebody asks ye which medium yer company works tell English, bcoz i am in a telugu medium company!!

i am given a sharing-temp-accomodation with a guy who is wonderin why GOD gave him vocal chords & what the word "smile" that he read in the dictionary means!!! Nd, currently, other than VP, no one (including me) knows why i come to ofc everyday. hopefully soon i wil b given something 2 take back home either sal or work.

okie buddies. gotta stop here. do not want a new boss catching a new employee not working even though the new employee is jobless. :-) wil catch ye guys/gals later, sooner & often.

keep in touch.
